Paadal.fm is now Paadal Radio

I am sure you have noticed that Paadal.fm now redirects to Paadal.com. This is important move. Paadal is now ONE brand and ONE product. Initially when I thought about the concept of stations, I figured it would be a good idea to have a new application. This is a bad decision for 3 reasons,

1. For a tiny site like Paadal, its hard to maintain 2 brands and it segregates the audience.

2. FM domain costs more than COM. The smaller the costs, the longer the application can live to serve its purpose.

3. If you are a techie you will know that maintaining 2 applications (sharing code, deployment etc) is harder than one.

Paadal Radio is not yet fully integrated. The plan is to move the radio player to the popup window as well. Google Login & Facebook Login will be added soon.

In future, i will also start working on some of the requested features in the feedback section.

Once a while, we try to add more content along with adding more features. Now is one such time, we have added lot of devotionals, pop albums, instrumentals, drama and background music tracks. Check them out here

Paadal.fm player bug

Recently, many users reported issues with the Paadal.fm player. Users were able to select keywords for a station, but were unable to listen, since the player wasnt playing. This was happening only in IE and Chrome browsers. Mozilla Firefox had no issues with the player. A minor, but hard to track down bug was the reason. But its FIXED now. The Paadal.fm player works consistently across all browsers.

If you have neglected paadal.fm due to the player issue, we encourage you to revisit.

In general, a reported bug gets looked into when substantial number of users report it. This is due to our limited resources (both time and money). For a site with scarce resources, it is impractical to look into every bug/feature request.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank all our loyal users for reporting this bug. It is with your continuous support paadal.com and paadal.fm is possible.

We have all ears open for feedback (good/bad), do not hesitate to give us some.

Data lost

If you created an account with us or created a playlist during Sep 20 – Sep 27, it wont be available. The hosting provider screwed up. Don’t give up on us yet, we will be moving to a better provider to prevent issues like this from happening again.

Here’s the reason,

The hosting provider moved the site to a new server, and without checking whether the site is operational in the new one, all the data in the old server were purged. Guess what, the site didn’t work in the new server and the last backup the provider had for the old one was for Sep 20 2009. All data from Sep 20 – Sep 27 is lost.

Other than Paadal.fm, its been a while since there was any update to Paadal. Today, we did a major revamp of the content in Paadal. Many mistakes in the content were corrected, missing songs were added to albums, more albums were added, songs now contain lyrics and song writer information. Here is a quick stat

13783 Songs, 3165 of them contain lyrics

2716 Albums

684 Actors

105 Composers

906 Singers

99 Lyricsists

Ilayaraja composed around 800 albums, out of them Paadal now has 732 albums.

Ever since i added Shoutbox, “Search” seems to be the most requested feature. It makes perfect sense, considering the number of songs that are listed. Building a not-so-useful search is an easy task, but a useful one which would correct spellings and do suggestions is a daunting task. So I will come up with something that falls in the middle. I cannot promise a date, but “Search” is in the list of features to be added.

Its very encouraging to hear people’s feedback. I also got some interesting bugs pointed out. “Shoutbox” is totally anonymous, thats why i wrote a post to let everyone know that i am indeed reading the messages.

Also, if you experience any kind of issues (slow page loads, streaming issues etc) “Shoutbox” is the best way to let me know.
